Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
